History of Champagne Henriet-Bazin

Henriet Bazin HouseChampagne Henriet-Bazin traces its origins back to two families both deeply rooted in Champagne for many generations.

The Bazin family comes from the village of Verzenay. They were “vignerons”, who sold their grapes for pressing.

Towards the very end of the 19th century, Gaston Henriet married Eugénie Bazin, and soon after Gaston took the decision to start making his own champagnes, a bold move at the time when there were very few independent champagne-makers around.

It was Gaston’s son, Robert and his dynamic wife Huguette, who really set about expanding the business. They would travel the country exhibiting at fairs and markets first in the local area, then ever furyther afield. They had soon built sales up to 35,000 bottles: quite an achievement for a husband and wife team in those days!

In 1968, the family moved to the village of Villers-Marmery, where today it’s still family-owned and run by the father-daughter team consisting of Daniel Henriet and Marie-Noëlle Henriet-Rainon (4th and 5th generation respectively). This current team manages the business which has recently moved into much more modern premises.

Production today is around 80,000 bottles per year, 40% of which are exported. The family owns 3 hectares in Verzenay and Verzy (both Grand Cru villages), with Pinot Noir planted there.

The Chardonnay brings the elegance and freshness to Henriet-Bazin champagnes, whilst the Pinot Noir lends structure and body to the blend.
