Essential Steps
THE
ESSENTIAL
STEPS
A successful Champagne brand is not just built around a label design. It is built around clarity, commercial logic and disciplined execution.
Every project I undertake follows a structured framework, divided into three core areas:
Strategy - Marketing Foundations,
Product - Selection and Design,
Execution - Production and Preparation for Delivery.
Each must be considered before the project begins in earnest.
01 / Strategy
MARKETING
FOUNDATIONS
A poorly prepared project can fail to meet its objectives, not because of the wine but because of unclear thinking
Before engaging producers or discussing packaging, we address four essential questions.
What do you want to achieve? Is it:
A Champagne brand must have purpose beyond novelty. Clarity at this stage prevents disappointment later.
Who will buy your Champagne?
Champagne is a premium category with established global players. Your brand must have a clearly identifiable audience.
At a high level, we assess:
Not every idea is commercially viable at Champagne production costs. Part of my role is to give you an honest assessment before significant capital is committed.
We then assess:
This honest assessment allows us to make any adjustments to the project that are necessary to maximise the chances of success
Sometimes the correct advice is to refine. Occasionally it is to pause.
That discipline protects both your investment and your reputation.
02 / Product
SELECTION -
& DESIGN
Once the commercial foundation is sound, we move to structured product development in Champagne. I provide full hands-on management within the region, ensuring the project progresses efficiently and professionally.
The process typically follows five stages:
Establishing the criteria for success, as outlined above in Marketing Foundations.
Through established relationships in Champagne, I identify producers who are able to meet your requirements in terms of:
- The desired champagne style (e.g. Blanc de Blancs, Assemblage, Rosé, Vintage)
- The target cost price
- The required volumes
- Long-term ambitions
Access matters. Not every producer is appropriate for every project. For each client this part of the project involves:
- Tasting candidate champagnes*
- Meeting the candidate champagne makers*
- Aligning house style with your brand positioning
The wine must support the story — not the other way around.
* At least one visit to Champagne is recommended during the course of the project.
- Brand name validation and registration
- Trademark considerations
- Regulatory framework within Champagne
- Early compliance planning
Champagne is highly regulated. Decisions taken early affect everything downstream.
- Mandatory and aesthetic considerations
- Understanding the distinction between the brand name and the product name
- Cost implications
Guided by your vision of the look and quality of the brand, our objective is to achieve your desired outcome within the previously established budget and technical constraints.
- Analysis of the multitude of options available for packaging
- Technical specifications and price quotations
- Sign-off of proofs before production
Packaging in Champagne is both aesthetic and regulatory. Proper coordination prevents delays and controls costs.
03 / Execution
PRODUCTION
& PREPARATION FOR DELIVERY
Once the design has been costed and finalised, it's time to place firm orders with the various suppliers involved. Thereafter, my role is to monitor production and ensure that all the components are ready at the right time so that the final preparation of the bottles can be completed.
Your order is usually supplied on an ex cellars basis and, if required, assistance is provided organising logistics to the final destination.
My role is hands-on within Champagne up to the point your product is ready for delivery. Beyond that, I offer strategic input on launch and market positioning based on my experience in the field of wines and spirits.
However, sales and distribution within the destination market must be managed by the client or by a team appointed by the client.
Precisely what approach you adopt will depend on, amongst other things, how you intend to reach your target customers and where they are located. Will you focus on restaurants, hotels and bars (the on-trade), wine stores (the off-trade) or is shipment direct to each customer the best option for you?
In addition, it's important to be aware that in each local market distinct laws, regulations and conventions apply, so advice from professionals well versed in your local market is recommended.
Ongoing Development
While my primary focus is on product creation, I can offer ongoing support and implementation in areas such as:
New cuvée development
Packaging evolution
Range extensions
Strategic repositioning
Champagne brands, when built properly, are long-term projects.
A Serious Undertaking
A Serious Undertaking
Creating a private Champagne brand requires:
It is not complicated when structured correctly — but it is complex and is never casual.
If you would like to explore whether your idea stands up to scrutiny, I invite you to begin with a preliminary discussion.
